In Craig Thompson’s Carnet de Voyage he makes reference to Bill Watterson, at one point, as being one of the greatest American nature cartoonists of all time. Just seeing his name (it had been some years since I’d thought about his strip Calvin and Hobbes, my all time favorite comic growing up), sent back a flood of images. Of lazy summer afternoons, distant worlds, giant monsters, bothersome parents, headless snowmen, wooded toboganing … the limits being the far reaches of a young boy’s imagination. This had me thinking … strange I should be so acquainted with someone’s art, someone’s life work, and never know what that person looks like. So I thought I’d find out for myself.
Bill Watterson, circa 1986.

Remind me to pick up all my old Calvin and Hobbes collections next time I visit the Rents.
