Weekend Recap

Wrapping up an awesome weekend. Friday in NYC with Matt we went to some comic book and record stores, got dinner at Vegetarian Paradise 2 (Veggie Pepper Steak) then off to Red Hook for No Fun Fest that was actually a whole lot of fun. We missed the Mouthus / Axolotl set, which was a bummer. We walked in as Anti-Freedom were playing. They are a stupid inside joke or something I think. Apparently the last song of their set was a cover of some white power song by a prominent neo nazi band I won’t name. Raionbashi & Kutzkelina were awesome – real psychadelic. A woman yodeling while a dude did live processing. It was much more than that and it sounds way better than you might think. Carlos Giffoni was good but not terribly interesting. I listened from outside.

Sissy Spacek was fucking incredible. Their set was 4 songs, 7 minutes long. The guitar player destroyed his guitar on the second song – it was rediculous. I talked to John Weise briefly and he was a super nice guy. Incapacitants were unbelievable. These two 40 something Japanese dudes making the most awesome noise ever. Totally going off with some contact mic’d tuna cans and a table full of pedals. There was a wall of people crowdsurfing, spilling on to the stage, right onto the foot of their tables. I got video of Sissy Spacek and Incapacitants sets, from a corner of the stage, directly across from Thurston Moore and Merzbow. That was pretty awesome. After the show we got lost in Brooklyn trying to drop off some of Matt’s friends, then crashed at his friend Sandy’s place. We had a quick brunch on Sunday (I ate an egg breakfast for the first time in years – it was free range and organic) with his friend Sandy and then we were back on the road to Baltimore.

We made it to the Field Party just before sunset on Saturday. It was raining all the way from NYC to 3 miles from the field. It was crazy, I was so nervous that it was going to be a mess but all the sudden was we are about to get there the rain just stopped. A few drops but for the most part a perfect spring evening. We all got hammered, hung out by the bonfire, set off fireworks, raced off road segways through the woods, etc etc. It was a noticibly smaller turnout than previous field parties but it was still loads of fun. I love field parties and I hope that Joe has some more of them this summer.

Today we woke up in the car, got ourselves functional then went to Mexican Cafe in Annapolis. Raven got the most amazing food ever (fried avacado with tomatoey rice and beans) and a mango margarita. We drove through Edgewater, East Port and downtown which I haven’t done in a long time I feel like. It was triggering all kinds of memories as I was driving around – something that happens consistently every time I go back to visit my parents. We went to Maryland Ave to get coffee and walk around a bit. We were hoping to go to the Tea Shop, but that was closed. We took the scenic way back to the highway then we headed back to Baltimore again.

We got home, got cleaned up, then left to swing by Atomic Books & Pop … something of a ritual every weekend now. I like to see if any new toys came out and Raven is a book junkie, two peas in a pod. As we were about to pull out of my parking space Bob calls me – he’s out front of my apartment on his bike. He jumps in the car with us and we all go to Hampden together. In Hampden we ran into Leah and her GF who were in town visiting. Leah’s GF seemed really nice. At Pop I got two new Acid Sweeties for free because I’d filled up my big spender card. I got X-Plorer which I’m really stoked about. I also got Egg Patrol, which I already had, so I gave that one to Bob.

When I got home I layed down cause I was beat and tried to watch The Hole, a movie on Netflix rental I’ve had for almost a week and I still hadn’t watched it. I got about halfway through that and it was kind of long winded so I instead passed out from the exhaustion that was this weekend. When I woke up it was 9 and the Lost “The Answers” special that had been downloading on Bit Torrent while I was asleep had finished so I watched that.

THIS WEEKEND FTW
